General Assistance (Welfare)

The department administers the State’s Work First NJ General Assistance Program to assist single adults over the age of 18 with no dependents and childless couples. The program is 100% state-funded and provides financial and emergency assistance to eligible Princeton residents who have no income and very limited resources.

The WFNJ GA program has two standards of monthly grants, which are $140.00 per month for an individual who is considered employable and $210.00 per month for an unemployable person.
Emergency Assistance (EA) is an extra or additional payment to GA recipients authorized immediately following the occurrence of an emergency. In addition, if the eligible individual is in a state of homelessness, the municipal welfare agency determines the provision of shelter.

Princeton Human Services provides referrals to State, County, and local agencies for every resident if eligible or ineligible for the GA Program who are struggling due to illness and hardship.

If you do not meet the criteria for the General Assistance and/or you  are a family wishing to apply for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) please contact the Mercer County Board of Social Services at (609) 989-4320 or (609) 989-4491 or toll-free at (800) 564-1595.

Outreach and advocacy of under-represented groups: the department has collaborated with the local Police Department and non-profit organizations to address the needs and challenges of the under-represented communities in Princeton. Since 2013, the focus of this work has been revising current municipal directives and ordinances to address the challenges faced by our immigrant population such as Wage Theft, Tuition Equality, creating a Welcoming Community, and building trust between the immigrant groups and the local police.

If you or someone you know have experienced wage theft, meaning you have not been paid for the work you have done or you were not properly paid overtime wages, please contact our office at 609-688-2055 or the Princeton Police Department to report a wage theft issue.
