Parking at Meters

General Information

There are several options for employee parking in the downtown, including:

  • 10-hour and 12-hour on-street meters are available throughout the downtown. Consult the Parking Map to see locations.

  • The Spring Street Municipal Parking Garage is open 7days a week, 24 hours a day and has similar rates as downtown meters.

  • Maclean Street Yard offers a 12-hour Business Parking Permit based on availability.

  • Many employers offer parking for their employees at their individual locations and through arrangements with privately owned parking garages.

On Weekends only:

  • Monument Hall parking lot can be used for employee parking on weekends.

Princeton University allows Lot 10 and Lot 10A on William Street to be used by visitors and employees on the weekend during the hours of 6AM to Midnight.

Meter Enforcement

Meters in most of Princeton are enforced Monday through Saturday from 8:00 am until 7:00 pm.

Some long-term lots are from 8:00 am until 6:00 pm, others from 6:00 am until 6:00 pm.

The meters in front of WaWa are enforced from 24 hours a day, every day including Sunday.

Princeton Station meters are enforced Monday through Saturday, 6 AM to 8 PM .

Enforcement hours are posted on signs in every metered area, and are printed on every meter.


Time Limits

Time Limits are posted on signs and on each meter.

When the time limit expires, you must move your vehicle.

It is illegal to put more money in the meter once the time limit has been reached.

The purpose of time limits is to ensure that parking spaces regularly become available for customers of area business and visitors.

Time limits are short in the Central Business District and longer as you move further away.

Meter Rates

Parking meters are enforced in Princeton Monday through Saturday from 8 AM to 7 PM, with the following exceptions:

  • In the Central Business District *, Monday through Saturday, 8 AM to 8 PM,
    Sunday 1 PM to 8 PM.

  • Long-term parking lots vary, and enforced from 8 AM to 6 PM or from 6 AM to 6 PM.

  • The meters in front of WAWA are enforced 24 hours a day,Monday through Sunday.
  • At the Princeton Station lot, Monday through Saturday, 6 AM to 8 PM.

* Central Business District generally bounded by Nassau St., Chambers St, Paul Robeson Pl.
& Vandeventer Ave.

Time limits and hours of enforcement for parking meters are posted on signs in every metered area, as well as on each parking meter. Please refer to the Parking Map parking meter time periods.

All meters will accept Smart Cards, U.S. nickels, dimes and quarters.

Multispace meters at the Princeton Station lot will accept, $1 and $5 bills, credit cards and Smart Cards.

It is illegal to put anything other than these coins in a meter, or to tamper with a meter in any way.
Rates vary per location, and are generally lower outside of the Central Business District.

Municipal Parking Garage at Spring Street

Payment for parking can be made in the following ways:

  • Prior to returning to your car, pay at one of the three pay on foot station using cash or credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express).    The pay on foot stations are located at the Spring Street, Sylvia Beach Way, and Hinds Plaza pedestrian entrances.
  • Pay directly at the exit terminals with a credit card.

Malfunctioning Meters

Park at a different meter if possible.

Note the identification number on the meter housing, for example GCY23.

Take note of what happened or did not happen when you put coins in the meter.

What kind of coin did you use? How much time did you receive for each coin?

If you received a parking ticket, please call the Violations Department at 609/924-5042 to report the meter malfunction.

If you did not receive a ticket but the meter is not working, please report it to Access Princeton at 609-924-4141, accessprinceton@princetonnj.gov, or via the Access Princeton downloadable mobile app.

We will have someone repair the meter as soon as possible.

On-Street Parking in Non-Metered Areas

Parking is permitted on many residential streets.

Time limits and restrictions are posted on signs in each area.

You must leave the parking space when the time limit has been reached.

Parking is permitted in loading zones after enforcement hours.

Overnight Parking

It is illegal to park on any street in the former Borough for more than one hour between 2 am until 6 am.

Overnight parking in lots is by permit only.

Parking is available in the garages 24 hours a day.

Parking Permits & Meter Bags

Parking Permits Residential parking permits are issued by the Municipal Clerk’s Office (609) 924-5704

Meter BagsThere are certain situations for which a locking meter bag can be issued for a fee by the Office of Infrastructure and Operations/Sewer Operating Committee.  (For example, special equipment that must be located in close proximity to a construction site or for special events).  Please contact the office at 609-497-7639 for current rates and regulations.

Title 39 Motor Vehicle Laws
In accordance with N.J.S.A. 39:4-138, parking is prohibited at the following locations:

  • Within 50 feet of a stop sign
  • Within 25 feet of a crosswalk or side line of an intersecting street
  • Within 10 feet of a fire hydrant
  • Within 50 feet of the nearest rail of a railroad crossing
  • Within 20 feet of the driveway entrance to any fire station, and on any side line of a street opposite the entrance within 75 feet of said entrance when properly signposted
